Resumen. This article compares the concepts of nagual and tonal found in Carlos Castaneda’s saga, Teachings of Don Juan: a Yaqui Way of Knowledge with the cosmogony and folklore of some Mexican indigenous groups. Its purpose is to show how the modern literary works may re-elaborate ancient myths. Based on the writings of the Argentinean Raúl Cortazar it reconsiders the theory of folklore showing its importance in the study of all artistic expressions.
